Art Studio of the Week: Holly Durr

Drawing table
1. What is your name and what kind of art or crafting do you do?

My name is Holly Durr. I draw fantasy and fine art. My fantasy art is mainly angels and mermaids. With my fine art, I love to draw still life. I occasional make polymer dolls.

2. Please tell us a bit about yourself.

I'm a wife to a hard working Coal Miner, named Roy. I'm a mother of two children and a stepchild. My stepson, James is 14, My son, Joseph is seven and my Daughter, Savannah just turned One. I live in West Virginia, in the country. I live a pretty simple life. I feel very lucky and blessed to be able to work from home and be with my children.

3. Please tell us about your studio, what do you like most about it? Least?

My studio is brand new. We just finished building it a few weeks ago. It's hard to pick just one Desk and storagething that I like the most about it. I would probably have to say space. The reason is, because my first studio was a unfinished room, about half the size my studio is now. I couldn't fit everything in it. We ended up turning it into a bedroom for my stepson. Then I ended up crammed in the tiniest bedroom in our home for about a year. Then I got pregnant with my daughter, and knew I had to give up that tiny space. My stuff then ended up being store in the basement. I wasn't sure what was going to happen next. Then my husband and I decided to build a large studio in the basement. When we drew up the plans, my number one priority was space. Rolling cabinet and counter top

The thing I like least about it is, I only have one tiny window in the corner. We are eventually going to take the window out and put in french doors or something of that nature. I have a patio on the other side of that wall and it would be wonderful to be able to go out and sketch on the patio.

4. What is the number 1 thing you use in your studio that you'd
recommend we all run out to get for our own studios?

Number one thing, Hmmm... good heavy duty work furniture. After we finished building this I Storageknew I needed reliable furniture. It is worth investing in something you will use your whole life. It helps to keep your space clean and well organized. Make sure to shop around before buying and plan ahead for what kind of furniture you will need. A good storage cabinet and rack is really useful if you need storage or extra storage space.

5. Anything else you'd like to add?

If your a stay at home mom or dad, make sure to childproof your Artist's daughter and her play areaspace. Everything was planned and built around my one year old. I didn't want to have to worry or chase after her every five seconds while trying to work in the studio. All my cabinets and drawers lock. I put everything high up on my storage rack that is harmful to her. All the plugins are about 3.5' up from the floor, so those little fingers can't get to them. The furniture is very very heavy, so it won't tip over, like those cheap plastic storage racks. Also I have a play area with some toys and a small T.V. for my daughter. I felt the space not only needed to be comfortable for me, but my daughter too.
